What is the G7 Summit?

In the news there has been a lot of talk surrounding the G7, with headlines ranging from issue to issue, country to country. So, are you wondering what the G7 is, why it happens, and everything that went down this year? Read more to learn about the G7 Summit, 2019. 

 

History of the G7 

The G7 stands for “Group of Seven” The G7 was formerly referred to as the G8 (Group of Eight) as Russia was a previous member of this group. They were removed from the group due to the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. The purpose of creating this group of nations was to have an annual summit with leaders from various countries to discuss issues and pressing world topics. The first summit was held in 1975, with 6 countries, France, Italy, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and West Germany. Later Canada and Russia joined this group to form the G8. 

 

Who attends?

The Group of 7 currently consists of Italy, Germany, Japan, Canada, United Kingdom, and the United States. 

 

What is the purpose of the G7?

Annually, there will be a G7 summit hosted in one of the various G7 nations. Although there is nothing binding the group, the purpose is typically to discuss goals as nations together and strength relations. Commitments are typically made, but there is nothing binding the country to following through with these commitments. 

 

The 2019 G7 Summit

The summit this year was hosted in Biarritz, France from August 24-26th. Although the host sets the agenda, that doesn’t stop countries from meeting one on one to discuss topics more specifically or completely different. France put forward the agenda for the summit with the core goals focusing around these topics;

  • Fighting inequality of opportunity, promoting in particular gender equality, access to education and high-quality health services

  • Reducing environmental inequality by protecting our planet through climate finance and a fair ecological transition, preserving biodiversity and the oceans

  • Promoting more fair and equitable trade, tax and development policies

  • Taking action for peace, against security threats and terrorism, which weaken the foundations of our societies

  • Tapping into the opportunities created by digital technology and artificial intelligence

 

What was the outcome of the G7?

Any outcome for the G7 Summit is based around trying to strengthen relations between nations and work towards a common goal. So, did any of that happen in France? Here are some of the highlights;
